First Notice of upcoming 2023 Spring Elections

February 17, 2023 by Lynelle Yutani 1 Comment

Happy Friday, Members!

I wanted to inform you all of the upcoming Spring Elections.  Some of you may remember my blog post last fall, “Why should you care about Academic Governance?” which explains how important it is to have strong faculty representation on our Educational Council.

Our organization has been systematically attempting to expand their managerial rights as evidenced by the fact that they don’t even bother to engage any of the Unions on campus when developing their Strategic Plans.  We all need to be present, active, and united in the defence of our working conditions, academic freedoms, and contract rights.  Academic Governance is a vital part of how faculty are able to participate in the governance of our organization and we can’t afford for these seats to remain vacant!  (As happened last Spring.)

Upcoming Educational Council & Board of Governors Elections

If you have an interest in policy, curriculum, or having a role in the strategic leadership of the College, consider putting your nomination forward to serve on Camosun’s Education Council as a great way to make a difference.

Nomination Period: March 1 – 14, 2023

Election Voting: April 3 – 5, 2023

Education Council

  • Students: 4 seats with a term of August 1, 2023 – July 31, 2024
  • Faculty: 7 seats with a term of August 1, 2023 – July 31, 2025
  • Support Staff: 2 seats with a term of August 1, 2023 – July 31, 2025

This election, faculty from all areas are encouraged to run!

Board of Governors

  • Students: 2 seats with a term of August 1, 2023 – July 31, 2024
  • FYI, there is only ONE faculty rep on the BOG, but there are THREE student reps!  Please encourage your students to get involved if they really want to see their learning conditions improve!

Check out the Rules & Guidelines or email ac.nusomac@snoitcele for more information.

Feel free to contact me if you have questions about serving on EdCo and the importance of faculty representation in Collegial Governance at Camosun College.  This isn’t new, you hear this from me all the time, on repeat.  And I don’t want to be shouting into a void or an echo chamber, that’s why we’ve been asking you to fill out our communications survey.

Don’t worry, I’ll remind everyone again (and again, and again); expect to see this in CamNews, too!

I hope you all have a productive Reading Week; we hope to!  Your Bargaining team will be deep in negotiations next week on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday.  Remember we need to provide advance notice to the employer so be sure to contact @Kelly Pitman about upcoming dates if you’d like to join us next time as observers.
