Hi members!
Your Union wants you to be better informed about your Collective Agreement Rights. This time of year, it is important to know your rights on Faculty Appraisal! Try to join one of our upcoming Infosessions. We’re offering multiple sessions on this so as many of you can attend as possible.
Keep in mind a few things if you’re appraisal is already in progress:
The college can include only three elements in your appraisal:
- student feedback (if relevant)
- departmental feedback (often the chair but doesn’t have to be)
- self-evaluation on overall service to the college
You shouldn’t be required to provide your self-evaluation to the college before receiving your student feedback. If you’re being asked to do so, DO NOT SIGN off on your appraisal before getting an opportunity to review and respond to it!
You can & should include additional supportive information in your self-evaluation about how you continue to meet all of the college’s expectations for faculty performance. Additional helpful information to illustrate this point could include your SD reports or listing all of your personal and professional self-improvement activities, student feedback you have independently collected or received, peer and colleague feedback, positive feedback from external partners, and participation on college & departmental committees. Unless you’re receiving an unsuccessful appraisal, you don’t need to provide the college with any “areas for improvement”.
Student comments should never be used as the sole reason for an unsuccessful evaluation and NEVER sign an unsuccessful appraisal that you don’t agree with. You’re also entitled to have a Union representative present whenever you speak with your Dean or Director and we can also help to review the information used for your appraisal if you’re unsure how your supervisor has come to a decision.
There’s much more to learn and other ways we can support you through the process so try to make it to one of our upcoming Infosessions! You should be getting the invite to your college email account from our new Administrative Services Coordinator, Eva Jaycox! Contact ac.ytlucafnusomac@afcc if you haven’t gotten them yet.
Faculty Appraisal is often presented as a means of “professional improvement” to enhance our practice as instructors and employees, but we’ve sadly seen an increase in the process being used to create barriers to rights and weaponized for discipline purposes. Know Your Rights & don’t be caught unaware!
