Growing Number of Academic Associations Refusing to Attend the Federation for the Humanities and Social Sciences 2024 Congress as McGill University’s Law Department Still on Strike

Academic associations won’t attend McGill University conferences due to law faculty strike

Message to all faculty who are planning to attend Congress of Humanities and Social Sciences at McGill University in June

In light of the current Association of McGill Professors of Law (AMPL) strike, the CCFA would like to clarify our position on funding for this Professional Development activity. A number of you have already applied for and been granted PD funds to attend. Some of you have already received advances and paid for non-refundable flights. The CCFA does not endorse members crossing picket lines, however, we recognize your right to decide based on your own ethical principles. Therefore, if you decide you do not want to cross any picket lines, and so are no longer able to attend Congress, the CCFA supports your decision. If you have expenses that have already be paid for that are non-refundable, the PD fund will still reimburse you for those expenses, although these amounts will still be deducted from your total annual allotment of $4,000. Some of the congress activities have been relocated to off-site, and some have been rescheduled to online. This makes it more ambiguous as to whether attending in these alternative formats is considered crossing the picket line, and so you will need to do your own research and make your own decision about what you feel comfortable doing.

Should you still be traveling to Montreal we hope you will consider joining the picket lines in solidarity. Wear your Camosun College Faculty Association T-shirt and post your photos tagging @camosunfaculty (our Instagram account) or send them to ac.ytlucafnusomac@afcc and we’ll post them for you! Need to buy a shirt before you go? Visit our Square shop online to get yours!

Please NOTE: “All Employees covered by the Agreement have the right to refuse to cross a picket line arising out of a labour dispute. Any Employee failing to report for duty shall be considered absent without pay.” To avoid any risk of being penalized, if you decide not to attend Congress, we encourage you to either submit a revision to your SD plans, or exchange SD days for vacation days, and make sure your chair and deans are aware of your change in plans.
