Na'tsa'maht - Working Together as One: Artist Butch Dick

Congratulations to your newly elected CCFA Executives!

We are happy to announce that the following nominees have been elected or acclaimed to Office for 2024-25:

  • President: Lynelle Yutani (HHS)
  • VP: Blair Fisher (A&S)
  • Treasurer: Muyang (Mike) Zhong (A&S)
  • Contract Management Committee Chair: Peter Ove (A&S)
  • Contract Negotiating Committee Chair: Michael Stewart (A&S)
  • Professional Development Committee Chair: Martha McAlister (Learning Services)
  • Secretary: Erin Dibattista (HHS)
  • Member-at-large: Kendal Adam, Term Rep (HHS), Pei Mei Chia (Access), Mandy Hayre (HHS)

The new Executive Committee members will take office on September 1, 2024.

We are also pleased to inform you that Isabel Grondin (CSEE) has been elected to the position of CCFA Representative on the PD Committee, effective immediately.

The Executive Committee extends our gratitude to the Nominations Committee—Candace Fertile, Margaret Fast, and Janet Doherty for organizing and conducting an effective election. We would also like to thank Peg Ford and Eva Jaycox for all of their hard work in putting together our AGM meeting and arranging the catered lunch from Fig Deli that followed!

This year, the CCFA also celebrates our 50th Anniversary as a certified labour union, enjoy these photos from the May 4th Anniversary Party Celebration:

50th Anniversary Logo & Merchandise

We officially debuted our commissioned 50th Anniversary logo, symbolizing our union’s core functions of stewardship, negotiation, and advocacy, represented by three leaves of salal, a plant with medicinal significance across a number of indigenous cultures. We picked the salal because it flourishes on both campuses no matter the time of year.  This logo embodies our commitment to healing, supporting and protecting each other. It’s the inspiration of artist, Melissa Mills, recently full-time continuing member who also serves on the Contract Management Committee.

Thank you to our Federation of Post-Secondary Educators (FPSE) 2024 AGM Delegation!

From Left to right: Erin Dibattista, Frank Jankunis , Steve Popple, Blair Fisher, Jeanne Puritch, Peter Ove, Lynelle Yutani, Michael Stewart, and Francis Adu-Febiri

Delegates learned the results of the FPSE Equity Survey our members participated in last fall, Lynelle Yutani was elected to the FPSE Executive as a Member-At-Large, Vancouver Community College, Local 15 has withdrawn from the Federation, and delegates passed a resolution calling for Locals to disclose and divest from investments funding the ongoing violence in Israel, Gaza, and the West Bank.

In response, our members at the AGM voted that:

  • The CCFA commits to move towards  Environmental Social Governance (ESG) investing and or Socially Responsible Investing (SRI). We call upon our employer to do the same.
  • The CCFA advocate for the support and protection of the academic freedom and freedom of expression for all post-secondary students, staff, and faculty who demonstrate against violence, including Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and the continued holding of hostages by Hamas, and the complicity of Canadian institutions in the violence of the Israeli government and Hamas. We call upon our employer to do the same.

These statements were a combined effort by all members in attendance. During many debates on amended language, those assembled honored each other with a willingness to listen with empathy and understanding. In the end, it made me so proud that together we made a commitment to act in the face of great challenges.

We also had lively conversations about the interim budget, our privacy impact assessment and bargaining preparations. Then we discussed the state of Labour Relations and recent arbitration awards, including our Parking Grievance! All the Exec reports were attached to your meeting invite so you can catch up in case you missed the meeting. If you see someone you know in the picture above, just ask them what you might have missed!

Thank you so much to everyone who attended the AGM last week and for giving me the opportunity to serve you for another year as your president!

Lynelle Yutani, CCFA President 2021-2023

Lynelle serves on Presidents Council of the Federation of Post-Secondary Educators (FPSE) and was elected to FPSE Executive as a Member-at-Large. She is on a number of FPSE affiliate committees, including the 2SLGBTQIA+ and Racialized Workers Caucuses for the BC Fed, and is active in the Victoria Labour Congress. Lynelle also serves as V.P. of her Strata Council & oversees a rooftop community garden which partners with Harvest & Share Food Aid Society to grow fresh produce for local foodbanks and community food security programs.
