Know Your Rights: Faculty Hiring Panels

How is Hiring done in your Department?

I’ve heard about quite a few different processes being used and unfortunately, that’s a problem because there’s just one, acceptable BARGAINED process allowed.

From our most recent Memorandum of Settlement which will eventually become our 2022-2025 Collective Agreement.

Faculty Hiring Panels, as outlined in the Camosun-CCFA Memorandum of Agreement, are selection committees responsible for the hiring of new faculty members. The composition of the committee typically includes three faculty members, including the department chair (where applicable). The Dean or designate chairs the selection committee, and the maximum size of the committee is six members. All members of the committee actively participate in shortlisting, preparing interview questions, conducting interviews, and making recommendations for the preferred candidate. However, the final hiring decision is ultimately made by the Dean or Director.

Here’s what the new clause looks like.

1.06 Selection of New Faculty

Faculty Members of the respective department shall be consulted in the selection of all new faculty.

a) Where a selection committee is deemed necessary by the Dean/Director, the Selection Committee
shall normally consist of the following:

  1. the appropriate Dean/Director and/or designate, who shall be Selection Committee Chair,
  2. if applicable, the appropriate department Chair, or designate,
  3. two (2) Faculty Members from the department, appointed by the Department Chair. Where the department does not have a Chair as per Clause 6.04, three (3) Faculty Members will be elected by the Department.

b) The Selection Committee Chair may increase the number of participants provided that the total number does not exceed six (6).

c) All members of the Selection Committee will actively participate in shortlisting, preparing interview questions, interviewing, and the hiring recommendation. The Selection Committee will make its recommendation to the Dean/Director.

d} The final hiring decision shall be made by the Dean/Director.

Unfortunately, if your department’s hiring panels don’t follow this clause, the selected candidate may be invalid! We don’t want to disrupt the faculty selection process or increase anyone’s workload, especially our already overworked Chairs! That’s why it is so important for everyone to be paying attention to how hiring panels are being formed. The College claims to follow this policy for Recruitment & Selection and there is a Hiring Toolkit available on the HUB that you’ll need to use your single-sign-on to access.

Reach out to us if you have questions about your department’s hiring panels or if you think there’s been a violation of this new language!
