Happy New Year!
Most Camosun College faculty members should have received their long-awaited (and much fought-for) retro pay from the negotiated wage increases in the 2022-2025 Collective Agreement on December 15. This includes continuing members employed at any point from ratification on Sept 21 to the date of the first issue of the pay increase on October 12 and any term faculty who applied for retro pay as requested before November 27.
Continuing members currently on leave, including retired faculty members, should have received their retro pay on Dec 29.
Unfortunately, we hear reports that many retired faculty members did not receive their retro pay on schedule. The College erroneously relied on retired members applying for the retro pay to which they are entitled—even though we expressly established at bargaining that retirees would receive their pay automatically. If you are a retired faculty member (or know one!) who did not receive their pay on Dec 29, please contact the Union immediately at ac.ytlucafnusomac@gniniagrab. If you think you are entitled to retro pay but have not yet received it, you should also contact us!
The College does not inform the Union when a faculty member retires, nor do we know how to reach them. Yet another reason why it’s a good idea to send us your Member Details and subscribe to our newsletter (in the right-most column here on our website!).
If you received maternity or parental benefits during the retro pay period, you should have received the bulk of your back pay in December; however, we have been told that your benefits will need to be readjusted according to the new wage table and you should receive a second, smaller lump sum retro pay to account for the change in the coming weeks. Again, email your Union if you do not receive the money you are entitled to!
There will be many more updates this month about Check Your Cheque workshops to ensure your pay is correct, what to expect from your new benefits in 2024, and, yes, the popular Lifestyle and Wellness Spending Account, the rollout of which continues to frustrate us. Pick out those new yoga pants and Apple watches, because the $250 benefit is coming soon!
